Hartford et al.1* conducted a retrospective study of 798 primary total hip replacements by one surgeon performed using non-collared dual tapered femoral stems. The first group included 457 THA procedures implanted with the Avenir Hip System with a hybrid rasp-impaction broaching and the second included 341 THA implanted with another non-collared stem using impaction broaching1.
Intra-operative and 90-day post-operative fractures were identified in each group. Bivariate tests and multivariate regression analysis were used to compare the two groups.
Conclusion from the study was that the use of a hybrid rasp-impaction broach compared with impaction broach led to a reduced incidence of periprosthetic fractures when using a dual tapered stem through the direct anterior approach.
